What fits in the car

10 things at your kitchen table, 8 that need a building.

The second list is the useful one. A housecall practice works alongside a clinic rather than instead of one, and knowing where the line falls saves you a visit that could not have helped.

At your kitchen table

  • Full physical examination, on the floor or the sofa
  • Vaccinations and boosters for dogs and cats
  • Blood samples, urine, and skin scrapes, run at a laboratory
  • Ear, eye, and dental checks, and minor dental advice
  • Microchipping
  • Fluids under the skin for a dehydrated cat
  • Most medications, dispensed from the car
  • Quality of life assessment, unhurried
  • End of life care, at home, with the family present
  • Nail trims and anal glands, which nobody enjoys and somebody must do

Needs a building

  • X-rays. There is no machine that fits in a car.
  • Ultrasound scanning
  • Any surgery, including spays, neuters, and lump removals
  • General anaesthetic of any kind
  • Dental cleaning under anaesthetic
  • Hospitalisation, monitoring, or anything overnight
  • Emergencies. This is a scheduled practice with one vet.
  • Anything for an animal that cannot be safely handled at home

What it costs

Wellness visit and examination
$95
Plus the travel fee for your zone. One animal; each additional animal in the same visit is $45.
Sick visit
$120
Longer, because working out what is wrong at a kitchen table takes longer than at a clinic.
Vaccinations
$28 – $45 each
Depends which. Given at a wellness or sick visit rather than on their own.
Bloods, taken and sent
From $85
Laboratory cost included. Results usually back the following day and I ring rather than email.
Quality of life assessment
$110
Forty-five minutes, no decision required on the day, and a written note afterwards.
End of life, at home
$395
Includes sedation, the visit itself, and as long as it takes. Aftercare is arranged separately and priced by the crematorium.

Plus the travel fee for your band. Illustrative and confirmed when you book.
