The half rule
Five clauses. It costs us work every week.
It is written down because a promise a company can quietly stop keeping is not a promise. Hold us to it.

We quote the repair before doing it
Parts and labour, in writing, on the day of the diagnostic.

We name a comparable replacement
Same size, same type, mid-range, delivered and installed. Not the cheapest thing on a shelf and not a premium model.

If the repair is over half of that, we say so
In writing, on the recommendation, in the same size type as everything else.

You owe the diagnostic and nothing more
A hundred and ten dollars. No trip charge on top, no minimum labour, no parts you did not agree to.

You can go ahead anyway
Plenty of people do, and there are good reasons — a matched set, an integrated unit, a size that is no longer made. We will do it properly and not mention it again.
Why half, and not two thirds
Because a repaired fifteen-year-old machine has fifteen-year-old everything else in it. At half the replacement cost you are buying a couple of years for half the money, which is usually sensible. At two thirds you are buying a couple of years for two thirds, which usually is not.
